How I beat type 2 diabetes
Hi, I'm Ciera. I'm currently a diet controlled type 2 diabetic in remission for over 1 year. I was originally diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in September 2011. My grandmother had it so I saw her throughout my life, checking her blood sugar and injecting insulin. I never thought it would happen to me.
Unfortunately, the day before the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 I got the dreadful news I never wanted to hear, ".....you have diabetes". At that time my doctor placed me on Metformin 2x/day and Glipizide 1x/day and gave me an Accu-Chek Aviva meter. My blood sugars were very high at the time and in a few years my doctor discontinued the Glipizide and increased the Metformin.
By February 2017 my A1C was at it's highest at 10.1 and I was placed on Lantus Solostar insulin pen in addition to my Metformin. I was devastated because I didn't want to be on insulin. I had to make weekly trips to my doctor to get diabetic counseling. On September 9, 2017 I was admitted to the ICU with sepsis, pneumonia, and 6 other diagnoses. I remember the nurses injecting me with syringes full of insulin and the thought crossed my mind, ".... I can't live like this much longer."
In October, with the encouragement of my husband Antonio, I started dancing with a video game called Dance Central for XBox 360 and walking. I lost 80 lbs and by October 2017, my A1C dropped to 5.5! My doctor discontinued my insulin and medication and by August 2018, my A1C dropped to 5.2! Today, my doctor even told me that I am doing so well that I'm not even required to check my fasting or 2 hours after meals blood sugar anymore--just check if I feel hypoglycemic.
Of course I'm still going to use my favorite Accu-Chek Aviva meter but I'm here to say, I defeated diabetes and I'm in remission!
